First you will need to gather your ingredients. If you don't have everything this could be an oppertunity to invite over a special person or a neighbor who does and have them join the fun!
First you will need sugar. White granulated sugar is best. You will need some light corn syrup, cream of tartar pepermint extract or pepermint flavoring, and red food coloring. listed below is the incroments.
2 cups- sugar
1/2 cup- light corn syrup
1/2 cup- water
1/4 tsp.- cream of tartar

1 tsp.- peppermint extract or spearmint
1 tsp.-red food coloring
White food coloring is optional
First step, combine the first 5 ingredients and stir until sugar dissolves. Once dissolved cook with out stiring until candy mixture reaches 265f degrees. Once at desired tempature remove from heat and add peppermint extract lightly stiring it in until complitley mixed. Seperate the mixture into two even portions on a greased baking sheet. Greased with butter. Pour one half out into an 8 inch strip. then mix red food coloring into the remaning mix in the pot. Mix until compleatly red then pour onto sheet creating another 8 inch strip next t the other. Let cool until comfortable to hande but DON'T let the mixture harden. Working quickly, roll each strip together into a 10 or so inch long log, the thickness should resemble a candy cane. Cut each into two 5-inch lengths or your desired candy cane size. Curve the top of each to form the handle of a cane. Cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
*Use a Candy Thermometer and prepare your work space beforehand. butter your hands before you roll them out. you can always twist them more if you want more of a spiral.
